Not really a question, but I thought it would be a good place to make a suggestion that perhaps a developer out there can find and work on, or someone here could say "hey I'm working on that right now" so I can get really excited.

In class I interact with items on the screen via a smartboard all of the time. The iPad can potentially be a light and portable replacement.

The app would connect to 1 of the presenting computers displays via the network (the host computer would run a connect program like many iPhone/iPad apps do [air video, iTeleport, etc]). The display would be on the iPad, and when the user wanted, they could use the iPad to draw over anything on the screen. The drawing would be sent back to the host computer and displayed.

The app could also save screenshots for later, and two arrow buttons would be made to be the left and right arrow keystrokes so that presentations (ppt or keynote) could be advanced.

If anyone knows of something like this being developed, I'd love to know about it. If not and you are a developer, take my idea and go make lots of money!

It would be nice of all of the apps on a person's iPad could be categorized by placing them into folders rather than having rows and rows of apps on the screen of the iPad. Anyone else think this is a good idea?

(This is a Community Wiki post. Please edit the post directly.)

Please recommend applications suitable for teaching literacy:

Stanza

Stanza (currently iPhone/iPod Touch app) is a great free app with access to 100,000+ ebooks. Many of classics (ones that are out of copyright) are available for free and can be downloaded directly from Project Gutenberg within the application.

StoryKit

To teach storywriting I can highly recommend storykit that allows you to place images next to your writing and have it work as a type of book.

I'm in the first phases of of my dissertation, and I'm wanting to do it on multi-touch tablet computing (iPad) in k-12 environments. Anyone know of some schools that are adopting the iPad. Personally I see it as a game changer on the level of the PC's first introduction into the k-12 environment. We haven't begun to see the effect of the iPad, but then again how could we. It is very new. My hope is that Apple can keep up with what education needs the device to do.

Thanks for any help. So glad to find this site,

I'm having a difficult time determining which textbook suppliers have or are making available electronic textbooks for the iPad / ePub format. Is there a list or catalog that one can search to answer questions for schools trying to determine what is and will be available? I've tried chasing down info from the sites for the publishers announced (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, Kaplan, McGraw-Hill, and Pearson) but there doesn't seem to be anything updated for iPad yet. Also, I'd like to convey what's available in the iBooks app and I am not regularly on an iPad or iOS4 device that supports iBooks. Is there a way to determine this on a normal desktop computer? Thanks!

Has anyone verified that wave.google.com does or does not work on the iPad? I'm not on an iPad at the moment, but I thought perhaps others had tried things like Google Wave, Google Docs and other apps-in-the-browser to see if they worked and were usable on the iPad or not. I'll be able to test this shortly, but I welcome any input or experiences on the subject. Thanks!

I would like to do literature reviews while riding on long car trips, or in other places where I won't have wifi access. I would buy an iPad 3G in a heartbeat if I were able to:

Browse for journal articles on Google Scholar

download PDFs (including proprietary ones, after logging in to my school's library for access)

read the PDFs, annotate them

sync the PDFs and annotations to other computers, ideally a web account wherein I can view the PDFs from any other computer.

I don't need one app to do all of this. I know there are PDF readers, iAnnotate and other annotation utilities, but the snag is getting the PDFs off the web. I need to be able to find, download then make notes...

Does anyone know how to do this?

We are looking into replacing textbooks with an ereader (kindle, HP Slate or iPad). In its current incarnation, it doesn't appear that the iPad allows annotations of etexts. That would be a critical function for it to be useful in the English classroom. Does anyone know if that is going to be fixed in 4.0? Or if anyone is writing an app to deal with that problem?

You can do this on regular macs by going to the Services menu and selecting speech.
This would make books on the ipad to those student who struggle with reading.

Right now schools can buy $500 Ipads for $480 in lots of 10. SHAME ON APPLE*

I think it is time for large corportations to put students in front of profits. A producer and consumer media device like the Ipad could change the public school system in this country and all others. I can't believe that Steve Jobs and Apple only care about money.
The Ipad is ideal for improving education and students are always complaining about small amounts of technology in the schools. The Ipad has the power to change the system completely. I see a future where every child has an Ipad and software designed like Elements, using every sense we have and children loving learning and discovery. If the government is looking for a program that could change the United States future. This is it. We need to be able to buy these devices at cost and get them into the hands of our students ASAP. This is exactly the fix to our public school system!!!!

According to the Tech Specs at http://www.apple.com/ipad/specs/, the iPad will be able to view PDF documents. I know that PDFs can be viewed on the iPhone and iPod Touch. (I think there are a variety of applications, such as Stanza, that can open up PDFs on the iPhone and iPod Touch.)

Any ideas as to whether there will be an Apple product (such as a version of Preview made for the iPad) that will be able to open up PDF files on the iPad?
