How can an instructor remotely control a Keynote presentation from an iPad? Remote controls (I am aware of) use a USB dongle to the laptop. How can this work on an iPad given the 30-pin connector needs to be used to connect to the projector?

If you get Keynote on the iPad and use the VGA connector you can cable it directly to the projector, and since it's VGA then any normal VGA extension will work if the projector is mounted in a hard-to-reach place (e.g. the roof).

The iPad allows control of the internal and external displays as separate screens, so your iPad could show controls and the notes for the current slide with a preview of the next slide, while also allowing other features (not sure on exact features of Keynote on the iPad) such as possibly the ability to highlight or draw directly on the screen (e.g. circle something, again, not sure if that's supported).

Nothing is certain but a Bluetooth remote is one possibility. I wouldn't be surprised to see an iPhone app to "remote" the iPad either—though I'm not a fan of presenting using it. (Too big and draws too much attention to itself.)

Apple has developed a great program called Keynote Remote. It costs 1$ and connects your ipod touch to your computer via wireless network. I would imagine that this could be possible through bluetooth if wireless is not available, but I have an early ipod touch w/o bluetooth and haven't been able to connect w/o a wireless network.

Assuming that all iphone & ipod touch apps will work on the ipad, you could easily control a keynote presentation with the ipad.

I am extremely interested in a keynote interface on the ipad that allows me to manipulate my keynote presentation in real time - like mark up a slide with a "finger" pen while I am presenting.

That and I'm still wondering how to connect the ipad to a projector without trailing a cumbersome vga cable around the room. Perhaps you could link your ipad with a computer that is hooked up to the projector, thus projecting your ipad screen wirelessly. That could essentially turn the ipad into a (much better than the actual imho) smartboard.

Interestingly, the Keynote Remote iPhone app page was changed today. It doesn't say anything about working on the iPad in the description, however, if you look at the page name at the top of your browser, you will note it now says "Keynote Remote for iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad".

I use an app called "Desktop Connect" for the iPad that provides remote desktop and remote control capabilities.

I have Keynote Remote on my iPhone and Keynote on my iPad. Unfortunately, the apps have not been updated to work between the iPhone and iPad. The keynote remote only works between the mobile device and a Mac computer. ie. Macbook, iMac..etc. It does NOT work between mobile devices. I'm a bit miffed at this since the potential for a small form factor presentation load-out is possible, but ends up tethering you to the iPad for the duration of the presentation. I currently have an iPad 32GB and a USB rechargeable pico projector which all fit neatly into a samsonite soft messenger case. Total size roughtly 14" x 17". This leaves me able to set up a presentation in less than two minutes without the need for extention cords, long VGA cables and so on. Unfortunately, I have to remain glued to the iPad for the duration. There's little reason that the mobile app version of Keynote should not be upgraded for the Keynote remote compatibility.
