Will there be some kind of service (like Apple Remote Desktop) which will allow an administrator/teacher to mass-push or mass-pull information to and from the device during the working day -- as opposed to a physical cable sync.

I don't imagine that will be available at launch time, but it's obviously highly desirable. I use ARD all the time for our Mac desktops.

This is another feature that is on my list of requirements for a shared (free) API that could be used by educational apps.

It could either be peer-to-peer or via a central server, and could be as simple as "What app are they running, what information is that app providing (e.g. how far through the work)?" to as complex as seeing the contents of the device and if needed, being able to interact.

Due to the nature of how software works on the iPhone/iPad OS it would be an opt-in by any application that wants to support it, and we could do nothing if the student presses the home button and loads another (non supported) app, other than letting the server know that the app was exited (which could raise an alert to the teacher).

You will never see ARD for the iPad or iPod Touch, simply put, there is no user on the device, no user account, no administrator account. You authenticate with apps or web, nothing local on the device. The devices are not set up like tradition directory services found elsewhere. If you want ARD control, keep using laptops and desktops.

Just because there's no authentication dialog doesn't mean you're not running as a specific uid on an iPhone OS device. In fact, all applications run as root on iPhones. Remember that these devices are all BSD unix underneath. – Fraser Speirs Feb 15 at 19:01
